Disability Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability

Coffs Harbour Support Services (CHSS) welcomes the Disability Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability and believes the Disability Royal Commission is an important step in ensuring the human rights of people with disability are upheld now and into the future.

CHSS strongly condemns all violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation of people with disability, and has zero tolerance for any occurrence of violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation within our organisation.

We recognise that the Disability Royal Commission is a valuable and necessary avenue that will bring to light the unacceptable ways that people with disability have been treated by various organisations, institutions and people. The Disability Royal Commission will enable a quality improvement platform from which all organisations and people can build safeguards to ensure people with disability are protected from unacceptable and abhorrent practices into the future.

CHSS supports people to be empowered to live a good life through treating people with respect and fairness and encouraging independence, personal choice and control throughout service delivery. The Disability Royal Commission is another way that people with disability are given a voice to share their stories and experiences and stand up and be heard about how they have been treated in the past and how they want to be treated in the future.

This is also a valuable opportunity for everyone else to listen, to learn, to understand and to be better in treating people with disability with the human rights to which they are entitled.

The Disability Royal Commission encourages people to make submissions if they have any information that may be relevant to it. CHSS will support our clients and their representatives, as well as any of our staff members, to make a submission to the Royal Commission. CHSS will also provide support and information for anyone wishing to get a better understanding of what the Disability Royal Commission is about.

We believe that the Disability Royal Commission is a critical step in understanding how people with disability have had their human rights violated in the past, in providing an opportunity not only for their story to be heard, but for justice to be sought, and for all people to learn and grow from the lessons learnt throughout the process.
